For years, I bought those packages of sliced lunch meat - maybe two sandwiches' worth of ham or whatever, presented to the customer under a clear dome in the middle of a tray like some museum treasure, or at least a fancy cake.

Then one day I realized what I was paying for - and not only that, but how much of a markup.

That day, you see, I was thinking of buying a small cooked ham. Same company as the lunch meat, same stuff - but there was something very different about the price per pound. Math has never been my strong point, but, leaning over the meat counter, I managed to figure it out: They were charging twice as much for the sliced, packaged ham.

A few seconds spent slicing and packaging the ham meant a 100% markup. I decided to start making my own lunch meat, and I've never looked back.

First, I needed a meat slicer. Since my discovery, I was feeling too cheap to pay for one, so I got it with reward points from a department store. You can get an inexpensive electric slicer for less than 0 - much less on eBay. Mine's an Oster, and it cuts meat as thin as paper, or half an inch thick, or anywhere in between.

You don't have to stick to store-bought cooked ham and sausage. Leftover roast beef, roast pork, pot roast, and turkey roll also make great sandwiches, and they're not so loaded with chemicals as the lunch meat that may sit in the store for several weeks.

If you're slicing leftover meat from dinner, let it cool in the fridge overnight - this makes it much easier to slice. If you don't have time for that, just put it in the freezer for a couple of hours. Good news: though freezing does affect the texture of meat, you'll hardly notice this when it's sliced thinly enough.

While you've got the slicer going, cut up thicker slices of meat that you can reheat in sauce for another dinner. They'll be fine in the freezer until you can get to them, and you'll only have one cleanup session. Slice some potatoes for a casserole, or use it on French bread to get nice, even pieces.

Tufted Headboard - An Easy DIY Project

A tufted headboard not only adds glamour to your bedroom but it also adds comfort to your bed. It's a very easy to do project that can be done in an afternoon.

1/2 inch plywood

3 inches thick foam

Quilter's batting (fiberfill)

Spray foam adhesive

Button-making kit

Instructions

1. Measuring and cutting the plywood

I recommend having your plywood cut at your local hardware store or lumber yard, but if you want you can cut it yourself. In that case you'll need a circular saw or any other saw that you have available. Measure the width of your bed and add 2 inches. Then measure from the floor to the height you want your headboard to be and cut your plywood to these measurements.

2. Cutting the foam

Lay the foam on the floor and lay the cut plywood on top. With the marker trace the shape of the plywood on the foam and cut it with the utility knife or a pair of scissors. Don't worry about cutting it perfectly because the batting will go over and smooth the edges.

3. Drilling the holes for the buttons

Measure out and mark where you want the button-tufting to be. It's usually a square grid pattern, evenly spaced. Since the head board is going to be standing on the floor you just need to do this to the top part that's going to be visible. Drill holes in the board where you placed the marks.

4. Mounting the foam to the plywood

Spray one side of the plywood with the spray adhesive and place the foam on top.

5. Placing the batting

Cut the batting in a way that there is enough extra batting on all sides to wrap around the foam and the plywood. Spray the adhesive on the foam am place the batting on top. Run your hands over the batting pressing it against the foam to make sure it's glued evenly to the foam. Flip the plywood with the foam and batting attached and lay it flat on the floor. Gently pull the batting and staple it to the back of the plywood. Staple first the top center then the bottom center. Do the same to the sides and then staple all over in between those four initial staples making sure it's evenly stretched.

6. Covering the headboard with fabric

Iron the fabric to eliminate wrinkles. Lay the fabric on the floor right side down and place the batted plywood on top in a way that is centered on the fabric. If your fabric has a pattern make sure the pattern is lined up evenly with your board. Staple the fabric to the back of the plywood the same way you did the batting making sure to stretch tightly and evenly as you staple around the board. Trim the excess batting and fabric.

7. Placing the buttons

Cover the buttons with the fabric you want, following the instructions on the button-making kit. Double thread the upholstery needle and poke through the pre-drilled hole on the headboard from the back to the front, leaving some end of your thread hanging through the back. Tie the end of the thread to the finish nail on the back of the plywood in a way that it's laying flat against the plywood. String the button and poke back through the hole on the headboard. Pull the thread tight and tie it securely to the finish nail.

Repeat this step to all the buttons.

8. Securing the headboard in place

Since the headboard goes all the way to the floor, all you need to do is place it behind your bed pushing it against the wall to secure the headboard firmly in place.

How to Cut Memory Foam - Re-Sizing Your Memory Foam Mattress Topper

So you were lucky enough to inherit a memory foam mattress topper, but it's too big for your bed. Don't fruitlessly try to tape down the sides, cut that foam! Cutting memory foam is not nearly as hard as you would expect.

Though it is possible, cutting your memory foam mattress topper with a pair of ordinary kitchen shears will be difficult, time consuming, and will leave you with painful red marks where the scissors continually rapped upon your hand. Instead, use an electric knife! Most people have electric knives around the house for cutting the Thanksgiving turkey or Christmas ham. If you don't have one, ask your neighbors.

The next step is to measure your bed. Subtract 1/4 inch from the measurement of each side, and then draw those dimensions directly on the foam with a thick pen or marker. You want to cut the foam a tiny bit smaller than your mattress so that you'll have no problems pulling your sheets over the mattress topper.

Pull the foam on top of a table, with the end you plan to cut first just over the edge. Then use the knife as you would with a turkey, pushing lightly on the knife to cut a clean line through the memory foam. Be careful; as you wouldn't pull up and down with the electric knife on your family supper, you should use care when cutting the foam as well. The vibrations of the knife will force it to cut a straight line, but if you push and pull too much, too fast or too hard, you will get jagged edges on your mattress topper.

How to Make a Teepee?

A Teepee is a form of cone-shaped tent house, created to function as a movable home. The modern Teepees are normally constructed with canvas but before they were mainly constructed with animal skins or birch barks. It is deeply associated with the Native Americans who were the chief users of this kind of housing, they were convenient because they could be easily put together and disassembled whenever a clan were ready to move again to a new area. Despite the fact that teepees are created small they are known to be very robust and can also withstand almost any climate such as the cold, strong winds and heavy rains. Teepees provide warmth in the cold seasons as well as it was cool in the summer time. Unlike other tents individuals are able to start fires from inside the teepee as a way to keep warm or cook food because it was constructed to be self-ventilated. Instructions are as follows:

1. First instruction will be to trim the canvas that will be used for the teepee. Shape out the canvas into a half circle using a sharp razor or knife so that its twice the length as it is wide. It is recommended to make it 15-by-30 feet and cut two smoke flaps in the center of the canvas.

2. Now cut a half circle door opening into each side of the canvas so that when the edges are brought together it forms a circular door entrance. Now use an extra circular piece of canvas to construct the door and fold a pocket into it and put in a heavy stick that will keep the door closed and hem it onto the teepee canvas.

3. Construct three little cornered pockets from portion of the canvas. Use the needle and thread to sew them to the tip of the smoke flaps. Use an extra piece of canvas to reinforce the areas of the smoke flaps where there is a large amount of stress.

4. Hem a rope over the rounded base at the base of the canvas. Then place evenly spaced rope loops around it to firmly peg down the teepee. Now fasten a rope at the top to lash the top part onto the rods when the teepee is put upright.

5. The 12 poles for the teepee should be no less than 3 feet longer than the breadth of the teepee top section. So for instance if the top is 15 feet in width then the poles are supposed to be 18 feet long and they should be straight and smooth.

6. Take three of the sturdiest rods to make the tripod. Use the cord to tie the tripod as one so that it's a bit taller than the cover. Rest the remaining of the poles against the tripod to create a cone shape desing for the teepee.

7. Now pull the cover over the frame and fasten them at the pinnacle using wooden pegs. Peg the bottom of the top section to the ground and move the poles to extend the covering and insert two light poles inside the pockets of the smoke flaps. This is the part which will work as a chimney, creating a draught.

Tips and Warnings

*When you are making a teepee, 10 feet should be the minimum height to use because this is much simpler to construct, less expensive to make and much simple to upkeep. However, if you want a teepee that can hold a lot more people each time and is smoke free then you should consider creating it to be much bigger one.

* You can also use various kinds of fabric like cotton flannel, duck or heavy unbleached muslin.
